Cheese Burger Bread

Idea of grilling burgers outdoors sounds yummy but is not always practical. For example, if you follow my suggestion of going to the city park to watch a movie or listen to a concert, there most likely will not be a set up there for you to fire up the grill. No problem. You can still have the taste of yummy cheeseburgers. The solution is cheeseburger bread.

I researched recipes, experimented and came up with a winner. Not only will friends and family love the taste, but it is very portable and taste great room temperature-- making it a great picnic food. Enjoy!

Cheeseburger Bread

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef or turkey
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced (or 1/4 garlic powder)
1/4 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tube of refrigerated pizza dough
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1. Heat the oven to 375° F.
2. Brown turkey in large skillet over medium high heat. Drain off the meat (you can skip this step if your meat is very lean). Stir in onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and heat until onion is transparent (about 4 minutes.

3. Stir in ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce into the turkey mixture then bring up to a bubble and simmer until thickened (about 4-5 minutes). Allow the meat mixture to cool.
4. Lightly grease a 10- by 15-inch cookie sheet or use an un-greased baking stone the same size.

5. Unroll the pizza dough onto the cookie sheet. Extend the dough to the edges of the cookie sheet, and be careful to keep the thickness of the dough even. Slice the pizza dough lengthwise to create two 5- by 15-inch rectangles.

6. Sprinkle the turkey mixture over the two doughs. Top with the shredded cheddar cheese.

7. Fold over about 1 inch of the short ends, then roll up each rectangle the long way to create 2 loaves. Pinch the ends closed.

8. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let the loaves cool for about 5 minutes before slicing.

Makes 8 servings.

Doing it in the park, doing it after dark, oh yeah...

No, not that. I'm talking about watching movies in the park! During the summer months, city parks across the nation are turning their grassy lawns into outdoor movie theaters. If offered in your city, I encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities for free outdoor entertainment. Here's a list of things to bring to help take full advantage of this good ol' family-friendly fun.

Essentials
1) Blankets &/or Folding Chairs

3) Drinks --- Avoid sodas with caffeine for the kids
4) Snacks --- The movies start at nightfall (usually after 8pm). This time of evening does not call for heavy food.

Get-togethers with friends can be great. Even a simple meeting over coffee can lead to great laughs and fond memories. While the occasion may be simple, the task of coordinating busy schedules for a mutually convenient meet up time, can be challenging. The more people there are, the more difficult it is to nail down a particular time. Fortunately, there is a website that can really help.

When Is Good is a free and easy way to get those get-togethers or meetings scheduled. There’s nothing to sign up for, and no password to remember. There are only three simple steps to schedule your event:
1. Click the grid for all the times that are good for you. You get a link to email to your invitees.
2. They see your proposed times and click on when they are free.
3. You visit your results page and see when everyone can get together.

The responses from the ladies conclude that 7pm on June 23 is best, with no conflicts. The red dots next to a time, indicate the number of people who had conflicts with that specific time. No Haters Allowed --How to attract positive people

Do you have friends or even associates where their presence puts you in a good mood?
Who encourages you to dream big and go for your goals?
Know anyone who freely shares information and leads by example?

The people that come to mind as you consider those questions are valuable gems. We can all use more people like that in our lives. Not only do they help us enjoy our current situations but they also help us progress forward to a brighter future.

On the flip side, most of us have seen or have experienced the affects from negative people. I'm talking about people who would rather complain than compliment, discourage instead of encourage, settle for less instead of shoot for more, or taunt instead of teach.

Perhaps it is because of low self esteem, fear or lack that these "haters" are not more giving, positive and progressive. Regardless of the reason, we don't need them. Instead let's focus on those wonderful gems.

A lot is said about surrounding one's self with positive, progressive people. Many millionaires credit their success with the fact that during their humble beginnings, they purposely associated with people who knew and had more they did. Biblical principles caution us to be careful of the company we keep . Biblical principles also guide us to only speak positive words as well as guard our ears (and hearts) from less than positive words.

OK, so how do we attract positive people into our lives? I believe one way is by treating others how we want to be treated. The second way is by focusing on the type of people we want in our life. Laws of attraction say that what we focus on and give attention to is what we will attract. Instead of fretting on 1) any "haters" or 2) a lack of positive people in your life, think about how nice it would be to have some B.A.S.I.C folk in your life and look for them.

Introducing the Disney Mocha Moms

I recently had the honor and pleasure of being invited to attend the 2nd Annual Walt Disney World African American Mom Blogger Mixer. This was an opportunity for online women of color to learn more about what Disney has to offer as well as connect with one another. Huge thanks to Maria Bailey, Laura Spencer and Leanne Jakubowski of Disney for making this fabulous experience possible.

What made it so fabulous? Top notch food & drinks, amazing attractions & accomadations and the fellowship with the other Disney Mocha Moms. This was our first time meeting in person but we left as dear friends. Introductions are below. Ana at Quiskaeya: Want the scoop on frugal green living? Then you must visit Ana's blog. There you will find plenty of eco-friendly tips and give-aways. She also shares warm and funny stories about her adventures in motherhood. I already miss her island accent and the fun we had "cheering" loudly during the Disney shows (Ana sounds like Zena the Warrior Princess).

Christie at My Life:A Work in Progress and Blogrollers: Christie is a blast. She has a great laugh and a fun spirit. Tune in to her online radio show at The Chatter Box and you are sure to become a fan too. This busy blogger, radio personality and life coach if full of knowledge and is so willing to share it.

Latricia at 1stopmom: Latricia came on the Disney Mocha Mom trip with a determination to experience life to the fullest and try as many things as possible. It was inspiring. She is what we call "good people" - sweet, down-to-earth, sincere and funny. Her blog lives of up to its name of being one stop for many resources and give-aways.

Maria Bailey of BSM Media: I call Maria "soul sistah #3". Although she is not a Mocha mom, as one of the trip organizer, she helped make the trip possible and her fun personality helped to make the trip so memorable. I think folk would be surprise to know that the business woman behind NewBaby.com, MomTalkRadio.com and Blue Suit Mom is such a hoot.

Ronnie at Black and Married with Kids: I have long admired the blog Ronnie created with her husband Lamar but this Disney trip was our first time meeting in person. Lucky me! She is so cool. Ronnie and Lamar are co-hosting (along with Blackmomsclub.com) a 3 day web conference for Black parents to discuss issues within the Black family. Sheena at Mommy Daddy Blog: Sheena was the youngest of our group but seemed so wise. Her little one came along and he was the best behaved baby! He has his mom's sweet disposition and gentle spirit. Tanisha at Girl, Lemme tell you: Check out that blog title. Sounds like a close girlfriend. Right away Tanisha seemed like an old friend. 6 Tips for More Effective To Do Lists

A written to do list is a simple technique that can increase your productivity by 20 percent or more, if you don't use it already. It also has extra benefits of clearing your mind and saving you energy and stress. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your to do lists.

1) Set Aside Time. Try to spend 5-10 minutes each day on planning your activities with a daily to do list. Start your day with it. Even better, every evening write a plan for the next day, listing your daily things to do.

2) Write. It is important that you actually WRITE your tasks. Some people are more comfortable doing it on paper, while others prefer using a computer. Try and see what works better for you.

3) Prioritize. After you've listed all your tasks, review your to do list and decide on the priority of each task. Give higher priority to the tasks that get you closer to your goals.

A proven simple technique is an ABC rating of your priorities. Mark the tasks on your to do list with ...
"A's" if they are critical for your goals and simply must be be done that day (or else you face serious consequences).
"B's" are less urgent but still important tasks that you should start right after you are done with "A's".
"C's" are "nice to do" things that you could do if you have any time left after "A's" and "C's". Those tasks can be safely moved to another day.

4) Plan The Unexpected. One important tip to keep in mind. If during a day some new unplanned task comes up, don't do anything until you put that new task on your list and rate it by priority. See it written among the other tasks and put it in perspective. The more you let go off the urge to skip that simple step, the more productive and satisfied you become.

5) Break Tasks Up. When making a to do list, break down your complex tasks into smaller manageable pieces, and focus on one at a time.

6) Finally, after completion of a task take a moment to look at the result and feel the satisfaction of the progress.

5 Tips To Make Your Cut Flowers Last Longer

Fresh flowers can brighten any room and are quickly becoming a feature in interior design. But drooping and dying flowers are a definite design “don’t.”

Whether you’ve cut fresh blooms from your backyard, buy from local market or you have received a bouquet, you will want to do everything that you can to keep your flowers looking beautiful.

Use the following tips to keep your cut flowers looking fresh and full as long as possible.
1) Start with the freshest flowers possible
If you’re buying fresh flowers to brighten your home each week, make sure you’re starting with a fresh bouquet. Buy your flowers at a farmer’s market or directly from a florist to ensure the best quality. You can make fresh flowers last longer than ones that have been sitting in cold storage for several days. If you’re cutting them yourself, make sure to prepare your vase and water before you cut so that you can instantly transport the flowers into their container.
2) Get the right container
Your vase or container should be tall enough to cover at least three to four inches of the flower stems, with a few extra inches for additional support. You can always trim your stems to fit the size of your vase. The size of your container doesn’t matter as much as the cleanliness of your container. Make sure your vase or other container has been cleaned thoroughly, because left over bacteria can age your flowers prematurely. Rinse out all of the soapy residue so it won’t damage your flowers.

3) Trim the ends of your stems
Fill your kitchen sink with cool water. Hold the stems underneath the level of the water and then trim them with sharp scissors. Make a diagonal cut so that all of the ends of the stems are pointed. This will increase the surface area of the flower stem that is exposed to the water, allowing the flowers to take in more water.

Prepare your vase
Fill your vase with enough warm water so that it will cover at least three to four inches of the stems. You can use specially made plant food that will increase the life of your flowers, or you can use aspirin. To use the aspirin method, crush two uncoated aspirin and add them to water. Stir in your plant food and aspirin completely into the water before adding your flowers.

4) Remove leaves
Submerged leaves are major contributors to the development of bacteria within a vase, which can shorten the shelf life of your flowers. Make sure you remove any leaves that will be below the level of the water to reduce bacteria. If any leaves fall into the water, remove them immediately.

5) Keep your vase clean
You should remove your flowers and add fresh water (with plant food or aspirin) as much as once a day. It’s important to at least switch the water out every three days to keep your flowers fresh. If a layer of scum begins to develop on the vase at the water level, remove the flowers and clean out the vase with a mild soap. Make sure to rinse thoroughly before adding the flowers back in.

How do we stay open to life's budding opportunities and beauty when we are experiencing economic and personal crisis?

By changing our beliefs towards the experiences we are encountering.

It can be difficult to bloom in our personal and professional lives when we are surrounded by doom and gloom.

It is no news that economic times are tough. With plant and company closures, layoffs, slow economy, decrease in revenues and markets dropping, it can leave one feeling depressed, anxious, angry and most of all, fearful.

When our professional world seems to be crumbling, it often affects our personal life as well.

Thinking positively doesn't seem enough when sales are down, or you lose your job, or you can't find a job, or you don't know what the future holds financially for you. Yet the more fearful you become, the harder it is to see budding opportunities.

So what do you do?

1. Question and confront your fears. Learn to let them go. Transform them so they won't hold you back. Denying them and perpetuating them doesn't make them go away. Confronting and altering them will.

2. Have faith even when times seem unbearable. It can be difficult to have faith when one is faced with life changing circumstances. This is the time when you need faith the most. These are the times that are testing your faith, your courage, your resilience, and perhaps even your very existence. Don't give up, gain faith.

3. Trust that you and/or your family will get through these difficult times. Know that you're not alone. Reach out for support and inspiration.

4. Know that opportunities will present themselves when you are open to receiving them. Just when you least expect it, someone or something will appear as if out of nowhere.

5. Get involved by troubleshooting and coming up with new and creative ideas, or another game plan or tactic. Sit down with family, friends, co-workers and business associates and brain storm, get new input, and ideas.

6. Listen to and surround yourself with people who are looking to blossom, not wither. When you surround yourself with like-minded people you are bound to come up like-minded ideas and ventures.

7. Get views from different sources on the best plan of action. It's beneficial to receive different views because sometimes we can become stuck in tunnel vision and we need to broaden our perspectives.

8. Review your talents and skills. Perhaps it's time to put them to better use. We never know what talents and skills are hiding and waiting to be explored.

9. Look around at the possibilities, rather than problems. We can become fixated on the problem, instead of the possibilities that are available. Don't wait for them to come knocking on your door. Get out and take a look around; you never know what might be waiting.

The Lion King Holds The Secret To Living A Golden Life

I would like to share with you a life changing revelation I was reminded of recently. It centers around a truth I heard before, but had recently lost focus of. This recent “Ah-ha” moment came about in part because of Maury Povich’s show and the fact that my family has been playing The Lion King DVD a lot lately. Strange combination but it revealed this amazing life lesson: Remember that you are a child of The King.

In case you forgot it or never saw the movie, here’s The Lion King story line…

The Lion King begins with Simba as a young lion cub in line to become king after his father Mufasa. Scar is Mufasa’s shady brother who is jealous and resentful that Simba, not Scar, is inline to become king.

Scar plots and succeeds in killing his brother Mufasa. Scar makes Simba think Mufasa’s death was the young cub’s fault and convinces his nephew to run away. Scar assumes Simba is also dead because he ordered the hyenas to follow Simba and kill him, but Simba escaped death and is living in a distant jungle with Timon & Pumbaa (a meerkat & warthog).

One night Simba is visited by the spirit of his father (voiced by James Earl Jones) who declares that his son has forgotten him. To this Simba protests but Mufasa explains to his now fully-grown son.

Mufasa: Simba, you have forgotten me.

Simba: NO, how could I?

Mufasa: You have forgotten who you are and so have forgotten me. Look inside yourself Simba. You are more than what you have become. You must take your place in the circle of life. You must take your place as king.

Simba: How can I go back? I’m not who I used to be.

Mufasa: Remember who you are. You are my son and the one true king. Remember who you are. Remember, remember, remember…

With the renewed focus of who he is as the king’s son, Simba overcomes his fear, overcomes his guilt, overcomes his past and confidently proceeds to claim his destiny. He immediately leaves to challenge his uncle (doesn’t even tell Timon and Pumbaa he’s leaving). He is on a mission, fired up to step up and claim his position as the rightful king. He boldly challenges his uncle and his uncle’s army of hyenas. In the end, Simba saves the day, saves the land, and saves his destiny.

Powerful stuff when you think about it.

Simba saved the land and started living a fabulous life all because he remembered that he was the son of the king. You too are the child of a king, The King of Kings. You were created by a divine all-mighty source. We were not created to fail or be miserable. The King desires for us to have a destiny of greatness too.

Yes, greatness is in store for us, however we also have free will and must actively claim these gifts of peace, joy and prosperity. Obstacles and distractions will come to block our path or blind us but that destiny is still there. We have to claim it.

Remember from his birth, Simba was destined to be the king. However, he was not living the life of a king until he decided to claim it. When he made the decision AND took action, greatness followed. Otherwise, Simba would have still been eating bugs with a warthog and a meerkat. It wasn’t a bad life hanging out with Timon and Pumbaa, but why settle for mediocrity when you can live out your full destiny in greatness?

Yes, remembering you are a child of The King empowers you to seek and live a life of greatness. How? Well, it gives a sense of entitlement, it gives a sense of power as well as a sense of responsibility (Do your actions give glory to The King?).

What really brought clarity to the truths reflected in The Lion King was The Maury Show. My husband watches the morning news while we get ready for work and school. However, this particular day, school was canceled because of snow (which never showed).

Instead of turning off the TV and leaving for school, the set stayed on and I stayed home with the kids. What followed the news was The Maury Show. I had not seen Maury in ages was surprised that he is still doing strife filled shows centered around paternity tests.

The first few minutes of this episode revealed that Shanequa had numerous children out of wedlock, was proud that her ex-boyfriend was cheating on his current girlfriend by continuing to sleep with Shanequa, and took pleasure in calling both her ex and his current girlfriend derogatory names (to which the audience responded enthusiastically). I quickly turned it off.

Programs like that are poison to our culture, go against so many biblical principles and sensationalize adultery, fornication, deceit, betrayal, selfishness, and strife. I know I’m not saying anything new with that. We all know it and know that the networks have their own agendas for broadcasting that nonsense.

The question that came to mind, as I thought of Shanequa was why? Why would she go on national television and carry on like that? Why would she live her life that way? Why would that behavior and lifestyle not be shameful to her?

The answer came to me instantly— She does not know who she is.

I recalled how Simba was told he was acting like he did not know who he was, that he had forgotten that his father was the king. It became obvious to me that Shanequa did not have revelation that her divine father was The King of Kings and what that meant. Intellectually we may know that we are created by God but lose sight of what that means.

For Simba, remembering he was the son of the king prompted him to stop doing foolish things and empowered him to take responsibility, claim his destiny and do great things. I believe the same can happen for Shanequa and for us all if we focus on the truth that we are children of The King. We may not be on national television “acting a fool” but are we currently claiming our full destiny, power, and life gifts? Do we carry ourselves as though we are royalty?

So if you have the movie, watch it again. Or just imagine James Earl Jones saying “Remember who you are…” and get fired up to claim you destiny.

I love green eye shadow. Not only is it vibrant, but it is so versatile. Green eye shadow looks great on light vanilla complexions, dark chocolate and all the skin tones in between. No Green Thumb? No Problem. Four Easy To Grow House Plants

Do you have a natural knack for getting plants to thrive and grow? Or, do you have a tendency to cause plants to die? Regardless of which category you fall in, the secret to maintaining healthy houseplants in your home is to get plants that are relatively easy to care for.

My parents and my grandparents have green thumbs but I seem to lack the talent (or is it discipline?) to maintain plants as well as they can. As for my dad, his talents lead him to start a business as an “interior landscaper” maintaining plants for NYC restaurants and office buildings. His idea of retirement is moving to a farm.

My mother’s lush collection of beautiful house plants includes plants as old as me. My mother’s mother can literally spit out seeds from store bought fruit and have them grow into new a peach tree in her yard or grape vine thriving on her fence. I am so fascinated by her ability to do that!

I appreciate my family’s natural ability to get plants to thrive in part because I lack that trait. I have learned that if I want to enjoy the benefits of healthy, beautiful houseplants, I need to have plants that are hearty and nearly self sufficient. These four plants fit that description.

Plants help to purify the air and make an interior space seem more inviting. That is if, the plant is looks healthy. Your odds of maintaining a healthy houseplant is increased it you have one the varieties shown below.

Even if prefer brighter surroundings, these plants can tolerate low light. Plus, these long-lived houseplants require infrequent watering. So, ~~forgetting to water the plants~~ leaving these plants alone for a while is not neglect, but a good thing.

1) Aspidistra (Cast Iron Plant)
This durable plant earned its nick name because it can grow in tough conditions, even in deep shade. It’s pointy sword-like leaves grow about 4" wide & 2' long and clump together. Aspidistra prefers low lights and likes drier conditions. It equires water less frequently, about every 8-10 days.

2) Sansevieria (Mother-in-Law Tongue or Snake Plant)
The Snake Plant or Mother-in-Law's Tongue gets its name because of its long, sharp, pointed leaves and because it never leaves. This plant is very tolerant of low light. Depending on the humidity, only 1 or 2 waterings are necessary indoors during the winter.

3) Dracaena Marginata (Dragon Tree)
There are many varieties of Dracaena and this one resembles a small palm tree that can reach 10 feet tall. It grows best in bright light but will tolerate low light. This plant likes drier conditions with less frequent watering. It actually likes to dry out a little between waterings.

4) Epipremnum (Pothos)
The Pothos is almost impossible to kill. It too like to dry out a little between waterings. This plane is very tolerant of all types of light conditions, even artificial office lights. You can let them trail down (10+ feet) or secure them to a support or trellis. There are many varieties of Pothos available.

Organizing your receipts is one tactic that can help you to see more green. That's green as in money, honey. Organizing receipts can help you to track your spending and identify where you can spend less. You might need a receipt to make a return or verify a payment. Having receipts can also help you to claim more deductions and thus get a bigger income tax return.

Speaking of taxes, income tax returns due by April 15th. Some of us have yet to file and are dreading having to hunt down and sort through receipts. Perhaps you have already reviewed last year's receipts and filed your taxes. Either way, now is a great time to review where and how you will organize future receipts.

Jessica Duquett, a professional organizer from It’s Not About Your Stuff, reminds us that people keep way too many receipts. She cites that are only a few reasons to save a receipt;
1) for warranty or insurance purposes
2) if the purchase has tax consequences (check with your tax preparer for the final word on what to keep)
3) if you think you might return the item in the near future.
4) if you made an internet purchase

Based on her recommendations, it makes sense to create a file or folder for each of these areas.

According to a recent survey, about 75% of the population do not know what their true passion is. This is an eye-opener because doing what we really love is absolutely necessary if we want to be fully happy. For some, finding one's true passion does come naturally, but most of the time, you have to ask yourself some questions to pinpoint exactly what you were born to do. Below is an insightful article by motivational coach and researcher Frederic Premji where he asks 7 questions that can guide you to finding your ultimate passion:

What puts a smile on your face?
Is there a particular event, a particular topic that makes your whole face just lighten up? Whatever it is that makes you smile, and makes you happy whenever you encounter it, this is a sign of something you are passionate about. I truly believe that happiness and passion walk hand in hand. Both require each other. So following what makes you truly happy is a wonderful way to figuring out what you were put on Earth for. Think about something that you do or that perhaps you used to do that brings total peace to you when you do it. Peace is happiness, and happiness is passion.

What do you find easy?
Usually, what we find easy for us to do, will be related to what we are passionate about. It’s very hard to hate something that is very easy for us! For example, let’s say you are naturally good at playing the piano, you will find the activity easy, and this ease makes it much more fun for you. Fun leads to happiness and happiness is synonymous with passion. So assess everything that you do, whatever it is that you find really easy and fun, this may very well be your passion. And don’t think that anything is off limits or silly. Some people have taken their passion for skateboarding, drawing, or collecting to full fledged careers. Remember this, you can make a career out of anything you are passionate about.

What sparks your creativity?
One of my passions growing up was hockey. It’s not too surprising, being Canadian and all. But I remember playing for hours and hours, and always coming up with different plays, and different methods to score goals. I was always full of creativity when playing hockey. Later in life, I developed similar creativity in business. Think about something in your life where you seem to always expand its horizon, always coming up with new, fun, and exciting ideas relating to that subject. Whatever makes you creative, is probably something that you are very passionate about.

What would you do for free?
In this society, we are ruled by the almighty dollar. That’s the way the system works, and that’s the game we have to play. The problem is, this leads many people to seek making money first, instead of what makes them happy. I have read countless number of stories about stock brokers and doctors for example, leaving their high paying positions to follow what they really love. There is a reason for that. I truly believe that if you follow what you are passionate about without thinking about if it will make you rich or not, you will end up being successful. Doing what you have a passion for brings out your best, and this leads to greatness. Greatness breezes to success. Do you think that the most successful people in the world got to where they are because they wanted to get rich? Absolutely not, they did what they were so passionate about, and their immense success was just a byproduct of their dedication. So think about something that you would just love to do, even if you were not getting paid. Think about something that you look forward to do, something that you wish you could do all the time.

What do you like to talk about?
The topics of conversation we have can definitely tell what we are interested in, and this is a good way to find out what we really enjoy in life. Most of the time, we aren’t totally aware of this. This is why, a very good way to figure this out properly, is to ask your friends. Ask them what they believe you like to talk about the most. Ask them what topic makes your eyes brighten up, and changes your entire behavior. I can guarantee you that some of their answers will be surprising to you. Some of these things weren’t that clear to you, but your friends can see the reaction on your face that you can’t see yourself. Try it out, it’s a very insightful exercise, and one that can direct you closer to figuring out your passion.

What makes you unafraid of failure?
When we do what we are passionate about, we have total confidence in our abilities. This makes us not worry about failing, because in our mind, how can we fail when we do what we love? Doing what you love is a success in and of itself, so failure is like an impossibility. Think of something that you just do or want to do, no matter what. Something that you do not have second thoughts about. Think about something that you feel you must do and that failure is not even a concern of yours, because the mere act of doing it is like the journey and the destination all wrapped up in one. This may very well be your true passion.

What would you regret not having tried?
We all have these dreams, and somehow, life pushes us in another direction, and next thing we know, we are far from those dreams we used to have. If you were at the end of your life, what would you regret not having pursued? What would you have liked to do, that you didn’t get a chance to? Think about what that might be. Whatever it is that you may experience regret now or later on for not having tried, this is a good chance to be your true passion. There is nothing worse than arriving at the end of the journey and having regret. This is why finding your passion, and following it is so important. Live your life so that you do not have regrets.

Salon Lash Application
Last week I went to a salon to have false lashes applied. I had not considered this service before but was curious after a friend mentioned going to a salon for lashes after the "gas grill incident". The process was actually relaxing . The stylist gently taped down my lower lashes so that they were out of the way, then applied clusters of lashes along my natural upper lash line. My eyes were closed.

The stylist warned that I may need to get used to how they look but that I would not feel the false lashes. She was right. We opted for a natural style of lashes but I they still reminded me a little of Miss Piggy. Well, that's not all bad since Miss P. is a diva. I just needed to get use to them. Overall I do really like them and the reaction I get with them.

The next day after the application, I was at my daughter's cheer leading competition and one of the other mothers told me I looked pretty. The next day at work, one of my female co-workers said the same thing! The only thing different were the lashes. Hee hee!

Since getting these lashes I have been out a couple of times without any other eye makeup and was happy that I still looked kinda made up. I can expect the lashes to last about 2 weeks if I am careful to avoid rubbing them. The average cost of salon application is $30 - $40 here in the South.

Google Calendar is a free, ad-free Internet calendar that lets you keep track of your own events and share your calendars with others. It's great for managing personal and professional schedules. I recently started using it found it to be an easy way for busy households to coordinate schedules. Google Calendar allows you to plan, coordinate and remind with ease on-line.

Sharing Calendars
My husband, Bill, and I both have Google Calendars that we share with each other. Bill is the "Soccer Dad". He enters our son's soccer games and practices on his calendar. I keep up with our daughter's gymnastics and cheer leading events on my calendar. Because we share calendars, we keep each other in the loop.

You can make calendars completely public. This would work well for organizations or education institutions. Anyone can add a public calendar to their calendar and view all the dates on it. You can share calendars with specific individuals, such as friends, family, or coworkers. This is easiest if you use Gmail, because Gmail auto-completes the email address of contacts as you type it. However, you don't have to have a Gmail address to send invitations.

You can choose to share only times when you're busy, share read-only access to event details, share the ability to edit events on your calendar, or share the ability to manage your calendar and invite others.

Multiple Calendars
I have actually created multiple calendars, with one for my job, my business and my family. I can set Google Calendar to simultaneously show appointments from all the calendars (including the one Bill shared with me) or I can limit which ones are in view. I can color code them to avoid confusion.

Reminders
I love that Google Calendar can send to my cell phone text messages that remind me of my appointments. Plus, any events that I enter into my Blackberry are automatically added to my Google Calendar!

In addition to text messages to your cell phone, Google Calendar can send you reminders as email. When you schedule events, you can send an email to the attendees to invite them to attend, much like you can with Microsoft Outlook. The email contains the event in .ics format, so they can import the details into iCal, Outlook, or other calendar tools.

Getting Started

Networking -- What's Love Got To Do With It?

Networking can be an effective tool to advance your career or grow your business. Through networking you can learn of new opportunities to pursue or gain resources to help get things done. The key word is that it CAN be. Unfortunately, for some of us, face-to-face networking is a stressful thing to avoid or an unproductive exercise of only collecting business cards.

I gained revelation a while back that the key to making networking an enjoyable and productive experience is love. Love of self, love for others and the love of God can make the difference. With the right mentality, it is easier to see opportunities for networking, to enjoy networking more and to become effective at it. Networking goals include: 1) making contacts 2) sharing information and 3) building relationships. Below are some love principles that will help you effectively reach your networking goals.

Walking In Love
Make it a priority to use networking as an opportunity to help and give to others. Give advice, referrals, and information. Have the other person’s interest in mind. Focus on what you can give and not on how you have to get something from others. Look at your product, service or background as being a tool to help someone else. There is someone who needs just what you offer. You can’t help them if they don’t know what you have to offer, so don’t be too shy to let folk know.

Seed Time/Harvest Time
You give to get. Helping someone may not lead to an immediate benefit directly from them but you will benefit at some point from some where. If we want divine connections, we need to be one to others. Helping others now is a way to sow seeds that can bring a harvest later.

God Is Your Source
Sometimes networking seems stressful because people are relying on the contacts made as the only way to create their success. Yes, success may come as result of contacts made but God is our ultimate source for success, not those networking contacts. So relax, keep it in perspective and take the pressure off. God will send divine connections, just put yourself in position to receive. Also keep in mind that what looks like a disappointment may be God getting you ready or in position for a future blessing.

Casting Out Fear
When it comes to networking, people often feel nervous or fearful. The devil uses fear to keep people from progressing. Yes, we will encounter fear but God did not give us a spirit of fear. That means we are not to allow fear to stop our progress or dictate how we act. Fear can 1) lead to desperate action which is not in line with God’s word (lies, manipulation, & cheating) or 2) fear can cause a lack of action. So do what you need to do even though you may feel fearful. Isn’t always the case that our worries were worse than the actual experience?

Faithfulness
We are called to be faithful. Time is a key element to being faithful, doing what we are suppose to do over time. When it comes to networking, consistently do it, if you want to see the full benefits.

Confidence
Confidence is an assurance that you are able. An advantage of being confident is that you take action and don’t let fear overcome you. Another advantage is that you will attract people and business. If you carry your self in a confident manner, this will build confidence in you from customers and employers. As a child of God you should be confident (greater is he that is in you…). Have positive self-esteem and know that you are able because God has your back. He gives you the authority and the power. God is all that and you are his.

You Are A Tool
Believers are a tool through which God can bless others. So 1) network so as to be in a position to help others and 2) expect good things to come to you so that you can bless others. Expect blessings to and through you.

Patience
Be patient. In the words of my mother, “patience is peaceful anticipation”. You know your success/prosperity is coming so there is no reason to stress. Following the principles outlined above will help you to keep up your confidence. Also remember that God has the big picture in mind. Although things may not work out just as you expected, don’t despair. God has the master plan and has good things are in store for you. His thoughts are bigger and better. Would you rather rely on your vision, wisdom and understanding or God’s? So chill out and enjoy the ride knowing he has great things in store for you.

Bottom line... Obey God, stay in faith, and allow God to direct your steps. Be optimistic and on the look out for divine connections. You may meet someone that may be the key to a victorious break through immediately or years to come. Believe and give thanks for divine connections. God can use anyone to be a blessing to you. God can also use you to be a blessing to others.

We Love Chandeliers!

I am giving my home a much needed update which includes redoing my daughter's bedroom. Madison is 8 years old and is no longer into the pink and green Waverly rose pattern I picked out for her room years ago. She wants something edgier but still girly, cute and fun.

The room's old pastel pinks and greens will be replaced with magenta, black and white. Instead of roses, we will accent Madison's bedroom with chandeliers. Yes, chandeliers! They add pizazz and drama to a room, just the thing for a pre-teen girl.

It Started With A Pillow
I first bought this Xhilaration Chandelier Pillow for its rich magenta pink color. However, the pillow's chandelier applique and crystal accents are what inspired me to play up the chandelier theme in this bedroom makeover. You can find purchase this pillow for $14.99 at Target.

Next Come The Wall Graphics
Madison's room will be painted in two shades of pink with a blocking technique similar to what was done in the Boy Room Makeover featured in The Sweet Life's January edition. The furniture in her new room will be white and black. So what art should go on the walls? The answer: STICKERS!

Well, they are actually over-sized, self-adhesive, removable decals made by Blik Surface Graphics. Just peel-n-place the vinyl decals to turn a flat surface into a whimsical wallscape. I love the modern designs Blik offers. We are adding Blik's Chandelier Wall Graphic ($30) to Madison's room in both black and white. Cool or what?

An Actual Chandelier To Finish
My search for an actual chandelier to replace the ceiling fan in Madison's room is still on-going. One find is this Flea Market Chandelier from Pottery Barn Kids. Priced at $129.00, this white 5-arm chandelier is sweet and charming. However, I decided to go for something more glamorous and now prefer a chandelier with crystals.

I searched various online retailers and local lighting stores but the best value and range of options were found at www.Gallery802.com. We all have heard the old saying that the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Salmon with Brown Sugar Glaze is just the way to do it.

It comes from Get 'Em Girls' Guide to the Power of Cuisine: Perfect Recipes for Spicing up Your Love Life by Shakara Bridgers, Jeniece Isley and Joan A. Davis.

Not only are the recipes inspirational (they make you WANT to cook) but the commentaries in the cook book are entertaining.

This seductive and sexy salmon dish is glazed with brown sugar and a hint of Dijon mustard. This is the ultimate date dish to prepare whenever you decide to finally cook for your beau. Joan makes this dish and says the men instantly fall in love with her.

2 tablespoons light brown sugar
2 teaspoons honey
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
4 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
4 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
2 teaspoons minced peeled fresh ginger
4 salmon fillets, about 6 ounces each
Vegetable oil
Salt and ground black pepper

1. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the brown sugar, honey, and butter. Remove from heat and whisk in the mustard, soy sauce, olive oil, and ginger. Set aside.

2. Preheat a grill pan over medium heat. Brush the salmon with vegetable oil and season to taste with salt and pepper.

3. Place the salmon skin-side down in the grill pan. Brush the flesh of the salmon fillets with the brown sugar mixture. Grill for 6 to 8 minutes for medium doneness, turning once after 5 to 6 minutes. Remove from pan and serve immediately, flesh side up.

Makes 2 to 4 servings

The result is a delicious slide show of their vision of Michelle for the big day and evening events of January 20th. The 40 slides also include proposed fashions for the charming first daughters, Sasha and Malia Obama.

Drawing Michelle Obama - What's the problem?

When Women's Wear Daily commissioned fashion designers to sketch Inauguration outfits for Michelle Obama, the resulting slide show triggered significant commentary-- not just on fashion but also on how incapable the world’s top fashion designers are of sketching Michelle.

Many of the online fashionistas have provided amusing critiques. Over at Make Fetch Happen , Brigitte's 14 different pics for the best and worst interpretations of Michelle are funny and insightful.

Brigitte observes: This Badgley Mishka dress seems like something that the 90s spit out. Their Michelle is all lips and hips with a dash of sass but really, how sassy can you be if you arrive at the Ball wearing a Steve Martin wig?

One of the Make Fetch Happen readers also made me chuckle, with the comment that "The Christian Lacroix sketches are exquisite too, but the inauguration is no time to channel Mahogany".

Elsewhere on the web, some other critiques were, well more critical, suggesting that the sketches are more about making social and political statements than artistic interpretations.

Slate’s Julia Turner:
The fashion world is notoriously inhospitable to black women—if Michelle Obama lands the cover of Vogue, as has been rumored, she’ll be one of the few black nonmodels ever to grace it—but these sketches suggest a discomfort with blackness that’s truly startling. Check out " Karl Lagerfeld’s “Mrs. Obama”: Leaning heavily on the peach cray-pas, he produces a woman who looks more like Jackie Kennedy than Michelle. Badgley Mischka’s Michelle is a buff-colored, collagen-lipped blank; Michael Kors goes for bronze; Marc Jacobs and Koi Suwannagate both produce sketches with recognizably Michelle-shaped hair but skin that registers somewhere between alabaster and geisha. Of course, fashion sketches are stylized, not representational, which gives these designers plenty of wiggle room. (This may or may not explain why Zac Posen’s Michelle looks like a dying guppy.) But still: Is it so hard to draw a woman with black skin?

At Mother Jones, Debra Dickerson chimes in:
One hates to get all psychological…but are these artists ‘helping’ her by making her whiter (and thus ‘capable’ of beauty) or are they so squeamish in imagining a sister in couture that they have to whitewash her to make her ‘worthy’ of high fashion?

And back at Slate, Marjorie Valbrum shares:
I too found some of the renderings of Michelle Obama questionable and also troubling because of their subtle use of stereotypical imagery. Christian Lacroix's Michelle is a sneering, mean-looking lady, much like the "angry black woman" the Obama haters accused Michellle Obama of being. Why is she frowning in every sketch? Doesn’t she have every reason to be happy? After all, her husband is the soon-to-be leader of the free world. You’d think the new first lady is smile-challenged. Same goes for Zak Posen’s scowling, slouching Michelle, an obviously sullen black woman. They might as well have thrown in the controversial New Yorker cover sketch of Michelle as black militant for good measure.

Obama's Designer Now At Target

There is no doubt that Michelle Obama is quickly becoming a style icon. Her fashion picks while on the Presidential campaign trail included cost-conscious labels. Remember the yellow JCrew outfit she wore for her Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance? Well, Presidential looks have now become more accessible.

On December 28, Target unveiled a new limited-edition collection from Thakoon Panichgul, an acclaimed fashion designer responsible for one of Michelle Obama's looks. Back in August, Michelle Obama arrived for the final night of the Democratic National Convention wearing a signature-print floral shift from Thakoon’s Resort collection. Like that Panichgul dress Michelle wore, the night her husband accepted the Democratic Party's nomination, the dresses and swimsuits in the Target collection are inspired by a Japanese tie-dying technique called Shiboir.

Panichgul's dresses sell for $1,500 at retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue. He copied some of those looks in the collection of resort wear at Target. When other high-end designers do collections for mass retailers, the less-expensive designs usually only have a slight resemblence to the designer's main line. However, with Panichgul, some of the Target silhouettes and patterns are very similar to specific looks from his high-end collection.

For example, a Spring 2008 “Shibori” pattern (inspired by the Japanese tie-dying techniques) and a pixelated floral print, that were roundly praised by fashion critics and retailers, were resuscitated in the Target collection, at much lower prices. A Shibori bikini top will retail for $16.99, while a “cyber floral” dress has the price tag of $39.99.

Even if you are not going to Washington DC for Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration you can still partake in this historic event by hosting your own Inauguration Party. Forget partying like a rock star when you can party FOR the nation's first African-American President and party like a BaRACK Star! Here are 5 tips to ensure that your Inauguration party is fabulously stylish.

1) Consider Ideal Day, Time & Type of Event
There are various ways you can celebrate Obama’s Inauguration. Pick the type of event that suits you and your guests. The nation will be celebrating his Inauguration the entire week so feel free to plan your event the weekend prior or even days after. If your guests are available during the day, consider hosting a brunch. Interested in a late night cocktail party or do you prefer a formal dinner? In my case, I will host a soirée the day of Inauguration. How To Create A FAMILY-Friendly Inauguration Party

Perhaps like me, you want to host a party the evening of the Inauguration but your guest list includes a number of people with young children. You could make the event strictly for the grown & sexy and require the parents to leave the little ones behind. That could be a challenge for your guests. Another option is to plan to include the children in the celebration. Don’t worry, your party can be both fabulous AND family-friendly.

Here are 5 easy party planning ideas for an Inauguration party where both the grown folk and the kids have a good time.

1. Start Early in Evening. Tuesday, January 20^th is a “school night”. If you start earlier, the party can complete its course early. Parents will appreciate the opportunity to get their “party on” without having to leave way before the party is over or greatly disrupting bedtime routines.

2. Add Kid-Friendly Foods. This is super easy to a party menu. Simply order pizza and have juice boxes available. Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches that have been cut into stars with a cookie cutter play up the patriotic theme, are fun to eat and easy to make.

3. Play A Movie. Play a Presidential themed movie for the kids to watch in a room separate from the adults. I suggest First Kid (1996), a Disney PG comedy-drama starring Sinbad as a wisecracking Secret Service agent assigned to protect the President's rebellious 14-year-old son.
4. Pop Some Popcorn. Complete the movie experience with popcorn served in individual snack bags. Craft stores, like Michael’s and AC Moore, sell small bags in red, white and blue that would work well for this.

5. Hire A Sitter. Consider hiring a college or high school student (or two) to look after the kids at your event while their parents party in another area. Mind you, crumb snatchers will likely try to leave the kiddy area to see Mommy but, having a sitter around can help if you want less interaction with the little ones.

Inauguration Party Games & Activities

January 20, 2009 will be a date we are all sure to remember as Barack Obama make history with his Inauguration as our 44^th President of the United States of America. Make your Inauguration party memorable by engaging your guests with a fun game or sentimental entertainment. In addition to the food, drink, and general merriment, consider incorporating one of the following Inauguration themed activities.

Presidential Trivia Game:

Research on-line for interesting facts surrounding Barack Obama, as well as history surrounding the Inauguration, past presidents, the election process and our federal government. Use the facts to create a trivia game for your guests. Here are some sample questions…

Where was Barack Obama born?

Which President in his Inaugural address declared, "And so my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country."?

Do you know the answers? Obama was born in Hawaii and the quote was from John F. Kennedy’s 1961 Inaugural address. To make questions easier you can always offer multiple choices for the answer.

Dream Catcher:

Barack Obama is an inspiration for us all. Here was a Black man with a very ethnic name and only two years as Senator who dared to become President of the United States. And he did it! Wow. He inspires folk to work harder, dream bigger and believe stronger.

You can celebrate this by encouraging your guests to each write out a BIG dream/goal they have. Have each guest compete the sentence "One day I will..." on a slip of paper and collect these dreams in a box or bowl. The bigger the dream the better. Later, you can read the slips out loud and have the guests try to guess who wrote the dream. You could also use the slips to select winners for door prizes. Say, what's your dream?

Obama Slide Show:

On election night, photographs were taken of the Obama family as they waited for the results of the Presidential election and celebrated Barack Obama's win. The Obama campaign has posted the photos in awe inspiring slide show currently available at Flickr. Sasha, Malia, Michelle, Jill and Joe Biden, Plouffe, Gibbs and Axelrod all make an appearance. You can play the slide show during your Inauguration Party for your guests to watch and ...feel. If you haven't already seen the slide show, trust me, you'll love it.

Inauguration Broadcast Programming:

There will extensive broadcast coverage of Inauguration related events starting Sunday, January 19^th. Consider recording some of the programs and playing them along with the live coverage. The television could be a quiet backdrop for your party or command center attention. You will have plenty of content to choose from. Sensational Star-Studded Centerpiece

What makes this modern, star-themed centerpiece so sensational is that it looks great (so fresh, so clean) and is really easy to create. This festive centerpiece was created by Jenn over at Hostess With The Mostess.

To recreate this look, you will need the following:

Foam stars: 4"-5" or larger (available at Michael’s or other craft supply stores)
Giant star craft punch (she used a 2.25" size)
Memo clips ($1.95 each at Crate and Barrel)
Decorative paper with red, white & blue patterns. Scrap book paper or gift wrapping paper would work well for this project.

To put it all together, Jenn instructs us to:

Punch stars out of the decorative paper
Affix the paper stars to the center of the foam stars with glue, double-stick tape, or mini pop dots to add a little more dimension
Insert the stars into the memo clips and line them up in a straight or staggered row. Flip a couple of clear glasses upside down to add height to the centerpiece.

1, 2, 3 and you are done. So Fab & So Simple!

Over at at Hostess Wth The Mostess, 5 stars were used, but you can really make the centerpiece as long as you like! TIP: Line up 10 or more for a really dramatic display - and you can even use varying sizes of glasses to add different levels.

You can also use the foam stars as super cute and inexpensive drink coasters!

For an extra "wow" factor Jenn suggests that you create a table runner from the same scrapbook paper or gift wrap used for the paper stars. This ties the table together and increases the festive factor.

Star-Spangled Party Foods

It is easy to create star-spangle party treats with star-shaped cookie cutters, baking pans & ice trays. Star shaped cutters, pans and trays can be found at most discount stores like Wal-mart as well as craft stores like Michaels. These simple cooking gadgets turn ordinary foods into posh treats with a patriotic flair.

Star-shaped cookie cutters can be used to turn sandwiches into themed-appetizers. How does egg-salad sandwiches with bacon and sweet black bread sound? Kids are sure to like PB&J sandwiches cut into fun star-shapes. If you are interested in making the Tea Sandwiches featured above, here's the Rachel Ray recipe.

Rachel Ray's "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" Tea Sandwiches
INGREDIENTS:
15 radishes, shredded
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh dill
1 stick plus 2 tablespoons (5 ounces) butter, softened
Grated peel of 1/2 lemon (about 2 teaspoons)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
One 1-pound loaf sliced whole wheat bread (16 to 18 slices)
Salt

DIRECTIONS:
In a bowl, toss the radishes with the dill. In another bowl, stir together the butter, lemon zest and pepper. Spread the lemon butter on one side of each bread slice; cover with the radish mixture and sprinkle with salt. Using a 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-inch star-shaped cookie cutter, cut out the sandwiches. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Use star-shaped baking pans like this Wilton Mini Star Silicone Mold to make Red Velvet Cake cupcakes. Unlike metal pans, silicone is very flexible. You will be able to easily remove your cupcakes without them sticking to the muffin pan. Just invert the mold and they'll pop right out. Silicone is not only flexible and durable, but heat resistant, which makes it perfect for your baking needs.

Easy Red Velvet Cake
INGREDIENTS:
1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
1 (3.5 ounce) package non-instant chocolate pudding mix
red food coloring, as desired
1/2 cup buttermilk

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Prepare cake according to package directions, substituting half of the water called for with buttermilk (approximately 1/2 cup). Stir in pudding mix and food coloring. Pour into cake pan(s) and bake according to package directions.

The star-shaped ice trays, like the Lekue Silicone Star Ice Cube Tray, can be filled red juice and blue punch to make colorful stars that will jazz up the drinks of your party guests. Add frozen berries to water or a clear juice to make the star-berry ice featured above.

Hot Raspberry Cider

A warm treat on a cold night!

INGREDIENTS:
8 cups of apple cider or juice
1 cup of frozen raspberry juice concentrate, thawed
1/4 cup sugar
1 cinnamon stick

Use your crockpot to keep this easy cider warm throughout your party.

Optional garnishes: additional cinnamon sticks, cinnamon, and whipped cream. Recipe Source: www.Recipe4Living.com

White Sangria Recipe

Below is a recipe adapted from the great sangria recipes given over at WasabiBratwurst—A Food Blog Full of Simple & Easy Recipes. I replaced the peaces and melon in the original recipe with frozen berries because of the winter season and our Inauguration theme. Delicious!

Use an inexpensive light to medium white wine such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. You can substitute lemon/lime soda (7up, Sprite, etc) for ginger ale. When using an acidic wine like Sauvignon, the soda helps to mellow out both the acidity and the booziness and, overall, brightens the flavor.

Ingredients:
1 lemon, sliced thin
1 cup frozen blue berries
1 cup frozen strawberries
¼ cup sugar
1 bottle of white wine
¼ cup orange liquor
2 cups ginger ale

Directions: In a large non-reactive bowl, very gently mash lemon and sugar. Then combine the rest of the ingredients (minus the soda) and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for a couple hours to let the flavors intensify. Right before serving, add the soda. Pour over ice, serve and enjoy!

True Blue Margarita

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients:
1 ounce white tequila
1 ounce Blue Curacao
1 ounce fresh lime juice
Salt or sugar for garnish

Directions:
Shake tequila with Blue Curacao and lime juice in a shaker with ice. Dip rim of margarita glass in water then in salt or sugar (red colored sugar would look extra snazzy). Pour drink in glass and serve. You can also serve this drink frozen after pureeing in a blender with ice.

Chocolate wrapped in Red, White & Blue are just the thing for fabulous Inauguration Party. This is a super easy way to give the room visual impact and your guests a culinary treat. Simply open the bags of chocolates and pour!

Dove Chocolate, Hershey’s Kisses and Hershey’s Bliss all come in red and blue foil. These chocolates are readily available in discount stores like Target, grocery stores and drug stores. Since Valentine’s Day is next month, expect to see red Hershey’s Kisses.

Red, White, & Blue (and more BLUE) - A Boy Room Make-Over

I am currently in the process of renovating and redecorating my home. As I proceed, I will share my progress along with cool finds and how-to-guides. The first room I completed is my son Austin's room. Coincidentally, the patriotic color scheme of his room goes with the theme of this Inauguration inspired edition of The Sweet Life (which is cool because I have a thing for themes).

The Furniture: Coordinated Pieces
I like consistent themes but I prefer for room furniture not to all look alike and come from the same suite. Instead I like for the pieces to be different but well coordinated. The trick to help a room not look like a mismatched mess is to repeat a color when you introduce it into the room. For visual balance, repeat the color three times so that the points of placement form a triangle across the room.

For Austin's room we have both black painted furniture and warm woods. In addition to the repetition of colors across the room, a repeated shutter detail helps to coordinate the complementary yet different wood finishes.

I wanted quality furniture but at a bargain price. I kept looking and found it with these pieces. They look great, are well constructed and available at surprisingly low prices. The Shutter Bunk Bed was only $399. The Sliding Door Chest was $299.

Colors: Don't Be Afraid of The Dark
It may go against conventional thinking to have dark navy walls and black furniture in a child's small room but it actually works well. The dark blue walls add more depth, making the room seem bigger. The blue & black also serve as a neutral backdrop that anchors the vibrant primary colors found in toys and children decor. What really makes the walls dynamic is the color blocking painting technique. The white strip is a bright accent and the darkest wall paint color does not overpower the room since it is applied to only two of the walls.
